Records fall as Harbour Swimmers Shine

With the Long Course Season under way, multiple swimmers have broken long standing Age Group and National Records over the past several weeks.  The weekend marked Bermuda’s first Long Course Championship Meet of the season with Harbour swimmers achieving multiple personal bests throughout the weekend.   Sloane Wright, Sam Bernadino, Walker Smith, Scarlett Spurling and Gabrielle Maranzana captured their Age Group titles as well as several swimmers achieving the standard for Silver and Gold Squads at Harbour.

The TYR Pro Series was held at the same time with Emma and Jack Harvey posting outstanding results throughout the weekend.  Competing against Olympic medalists in Fort Lauderdale, Jack Harvey broke all 3 of his National Backstroke Long Course Meter records. Jack qualified 6th for the 50 Backstroke final in a time of 25.21, smashing his previous record of 25.89 set last year.  He went on to qualify 4th in the 200 Backstroke in a time of 2:01.05, eclipsing his previous time of 2:04.01 set in 2023.  Harvey then went on to lower his 100 Backstroke record twice, finishing in 2nd place, just behind 2024 Olympic Gold Medalist, Hubert Kos, in a time of 54:56 – this brings him less than ½ second of the World Aquatics “A” Cut time.  Sister Emma had two record breaking swims on the weekend.  Emma finished 10th in the 50 Butterfly in a time of 26.75, breaking her own record of 26.88 set last year.  She went on to finish in 12th place in a time of 59.88 in the 100 Butterfly, breaking her own record of 59.89 set last year.

Prior to the weekend, multiple other records were broken by Harbour swimmers.  Thomas Cechini, representing Bermuda at CARIFTA in Trinidad and Tobago, broke Tyler Mazurek’s National 400 Freestyle record in a time of 4:07.78.  This record stood for nine years.  Connor Hupman broke his own record in the Boys 15-16 50 Backstroke in a time of 28.22.

Isabella Jones, representing the Repton School in the United Kingdom, set new Bermuda Resident records in the 50, 100 and 200 Breastroke events in the Girls 15-16 Age Group.

“It has been wonderful to see the recent performances of our younger swimmers achieving new standards and setting new records, whilst our Olympians, Emma and Jack Harvey continue to excel in the new Olympic cycle,” commented Harbour Head Coach, Shona Palmer.  “The future of Bermuda swimming is bright!”
